Isshaq Ismail

Isshaq Ismail is a Ghanaian contemporary artist born in 1989 in Accra, where he currently resides and works. He graduated from the Ghanatta College of Art and Design in 2012, where he honed his skills in painting.

Ismail is renowned for his distinctive painting style, which he terms “infantile semi-abstraction.” This approach combines bold, impasto brushwork with a vibrant color palette, resulting in figures that are both expressive and abstract. His works often depict faces and figures with exaggerated features, aiming to challenge traditional notions of beauty and aesthetics in figurative painting.

His works have been featured alongside icons such as El Anatsui at Christie’s in London, as well as through auction houses including Sotheby’s, Bonhams, and Phillips among other renowned global galleries.
